Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024This study examines multi-level governance in Sustainable Urban Development Strategies (SUDs) across Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, and Piedmont in Northern Italy. Utilising stakeholder interviews, document analysis, a CAWI survey, and a thematic laboratory, it explores regional implementation of SUDs. Despite regional variations, two primary needs emerge: policy and planning reforms towards participatory, integrated, and strategic approaches aligned with multi-level governance principles, and strengthened institutional capacity through training to integrate SUD principles and assess their impact. The study concludes by advocating for a cohesive SUD framework with enhanced regional collaboration and capacity building.
