Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Land readjustment, a promising yet often underestimated approach, encounters numerous hurdles in Portugal. Like many urban centres, Braga confronts the pressing need to accommodate a growing population and economic expansion, while safeguarding urban quality. The analysis delves into three case studies of land readjustment implemented through Execution Units, an operational planning tool. These cases underscore the challenges in balancing public objectives with private stakeholders' interests, steering legal frameworks, and achieving equitable outcomes. Despite successful collaborations and infrastructure developments in some instances, challenges persist in securing agreements, implementing comprehensive urban solutions, and fostering community engagement. The findings emphasize the importance of adaptive policy frameworks, collaborative governance structures, and strategic planning to overcome these challenges and realize sustainable urban development goals in Braga Municipality.
