Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Due to an ever-increasing change towards a circular economy and energy self-sufficiency, the energy production and the use of it must be redefined. This does not stop at the water- and wastewater industry, which is responsible for a large amount of a municipality's energy consumption. However, WWTPs can also make a significant contribution to the energy transition and circular economy. Sustainable hydrogen, produced decentrally, regionally and for regional consumers, will play a important role in the future energy supply. The aim of this study is to identify possible potentials and technologies for local hydrogen production, conceivable alternative uses, research programmes, funding opportunities, but also challenges and limits with regard to the possibilities of hydrogen production at the approximately 10,000 municipal WWTPs in Germany.
